Q: What is Google Video?
A: The Google Video index is the most comprehensive on the Web, containing millions of videos indexed and available for viewing.

Using Google Video, you can search for and watch an ever-growing collection of TV shows, movie clips, music videos, documentaries, personal productions and more from all over the Web. The Video index is comprised of videos that people have added using Googles services (YouTube, Google Video) as well as videos from other third-party sites.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: How does the Google Video search technology work?
A: In addition to searching among the many videos that exist on YouTube and Google Video, Googles spiders also crawl billions of pages from all over the Web, finding millions of videos for you to view. Googles advanced spidering technology analyzes the text on the page adjacent to the video, the video caption, and dozens of other factors to determine the video content. Google also uses sophisticated algorithms to remove duplicates and ensure that the highest quality videos are presented first in your results.

Back to FAQs Index

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: What can I do to make it more likely for my site's videos to get included in Google Video?
A: It's our goal to include every video on the Web in Google Video. To help make this goal a reality, we offer guidelines as well as tips for building a crawler-friendly site. While there's no guarantee that our spiders will find a particular site, following these guidelines should increase the chances of finding videos on your site in the Google Video search results.

Back to FAQs Index

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Can I pick any frame from the video or any other picture to represent my video?
A: No, you don't have the option to use any of the frames from your video as your thumbnail. You also can't use pictures or frames from other videos not within the video in question.

Currently, you can pick from the three thumbnails available under the heading, "Video Still:" on the page from which you edit your videos information.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: How can I upload videos so they appear when I do a search in Google Video?
A: The goal of Google Video is to include every video that exists on the web. It isn't restricted to videos from Google Video, YouTube, or from any other service. If you'd like your video to appear in the Google Video search results, you have several options:
Upload your video to YouTube. After you upload your video to YouTube, it will appear in the YouTube index. Our spiders will crawl the YouTube index and add the videos to Google Video.
Upload your video to Google Video. Another option is to use the Google Video Uploader. The videos you upload to Google Video get recognized by our spiders and will also appear in the Google Video search results.
Upload your video to any third party site. You can upload your video to any third-party site on the Web. Google's robots crawl the Web on a regular cycle searching billions of web pages. New videos will all be noted after our next crawl and will appear in Google Video search results.

Back to FAQs Index

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Why doesn't my video appear when I do a search in Google Video, even though my video has been on the Web for a long time?
A: Although Google crawls millions of pages with videos, it's inevitable that some videos will be missed. When our spiders miss a site on which a video appears, it's frequently because the site in question:
Isn't well connected through multiple links to other sites on the web.
Launched after Google's most recent crawl was completed.
Has a design that makes it difficult for Google to effectively crawl its content.
Was temporarily unavailable or we received an error when we tried to crawl it.
Although we index millions of videos and are constantly working to increase the number of videos we include, we can't guarantee that we'll crawl all of the videos that exist on the Web.

Back to FAQs Index

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Can I manually submit a video for inclusion in Google Video?
A: The best way to add a video to the Google Video search results is to upload it to YouTube or to any other site on the Web.

Although you can currently search millions of videos on the Web using Google Video, we're aware that there are many videos that we haven't yet added. We're working continuously to increase the quality and quantity of videos in our index, so it's likely that we'll add the one you're looking for in the near future.

Google's spiders crawl the web on a regular cycle, indexing billions of web pages and scanning for videos. New videos, changes to existing videos, and videos that no longer exist will all be noted after our next crawl, which will be completed soon.

Because we gather so much information during each crawl, the update process is completely automated.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: How are videos ranked in the Google Video search results?
A: Our intent is to represent the video content of the Internet fairly and accurately. We don't give special ranking preference to videos hosted by YouTube or Google Video, nor do we manipulate search results in any way. We believe strongly in allowing the democracy of the Web to determine the inclusion and ranking of videos in our search results. After determining the content of the video using our spidering technology, Google then combines sophisticated text-matching techniques to find videos that are both important and relevant to your search. Our technology examines dozens of aspects of the video's content (including number of hits and rating) to determine if it's a good match for your query. Please be assured that we're continually working to improve our algorithms to provide the most relevant results for your query.

Q: I can't hear the audio portion of my content. What do I do?
A: If you can't hear the audio portion of a video, try the following:
Adjust the volume control on your computer. (Your computer may have more than one volume control.)
Adjust the volume control located in the lower right corner of the Google Video Player.
Adjust the volume controls on other video players, such as Real Player, Quicktime, or Windows Media, which may affect your computer's volume level.
Confirm that your system meets the minimum requirements.
Play other videos. If the audio works for other videos, the audio problem you've experienced is likely related to a specific video, not your system.
If you're using a separate hardware device driver to hear sound on your computer, such as Total Recorder or USB Soundsticks, it may be affecting audio playback. We suggest switching the playback device to the standard audio driver or internal speakers on your computer system.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Why does the video stop playing?
A: If you're experiencing difficulty playing the entire video after clicking on the videos title, it may be due to your connection speed. Please note that a broadband connection with 500+ Kbps is required for continuous playback on Google Video.

If your connection speed is less than 500 Kbps, we suggest that you try playing videos on another system with a higher connection speed. Or, please wait until the entire video finishes buffering before playing the video.

If the video you've downloaded stops playing in the Google Video Player, please verify that the video has completely finished downloading. If the video hasn't finished downloading, you may notice that only certain portions of the video will play.

To ensure that you've downloaded a video file completely, follow these steps:
Make sure you have an active internet connection.
Click on the .gvp video file that is saved on your desktop. The Google Video Player should open automatically and the video will start playing.
Pause the video and allow the progress bar below the video to fill completely gray.
Once the video has finished downloading, you'll be able to play the video in its entirety. When the video has finished downloading, the completed video file will also be saved as a .gvi file. You can play the video directly from the saved file on your computer without having to download the video again. Typically, Google Video downloads can be found at "My Documents" > "My Videos" > "Google Videos." On the Macintosh OS, these files are located in "Finder" > "Movies." Please note, if you've purchased the video content, you'll still need an active Internet connection to view the downloaded video file.

Alternatively, you can also manually download a complete video file. By manually downloading a video, you can download and save the video file to your computer without having the video play through the Google Video Player first. To manually download a video, follow these steps:
Go to the videos playback page and click the "Download" button.
When prompted, select the option to save the video file. If you're not prompted to save the file, refer to the note below.
From your desktop, open the saved .gvp file using Wordpad. For Mac users, open the .gvp file using TextEdit.
In the text file, you should see a line that looks like "url: http://vp.video.google.com/... ". Copy that line, leaving the "url:" part out, and paste it into your web browser.
Once the file has finished downloading, save the file to your desktop. Then, use the Google Video Player to open the file.
Note: if you're using Internet Explorer, you may need to adjust your computer settings to receive a prompt to download a Google Video file. Here's how:
Go to the "Start" menu > "Control Panel" > "Folder Options."
On the "File Types" tab, select "GVP Google Video File" and click on "Advanced."
Check the box beside "Confirm open after download," and click "OK."
Close the "Folder Options" window and try downloading a video again.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: The video is choppy. How can I fix it?
A: If a video doesn't play continuously it may be due to your connection speed. A broadband connection with 500+ Kbps is required for continuous playback on Google Video. If your connection speed meets the minimum requirement, but you're still having difficulty playing videos, please try viewing the video at original or double size. To change the screen size, click on the arrow on the far right of the Google Video Player.

It's also possible that your video download speed is slow or inconsistent. In this case, you can try pausing the video until the entire stream is downloaded, then play the video.

Q: Any video I try to view is "temporarily unavailable." Why can't I view any videos?
A: If you have ad blocker, pop-up blocker, internet security, or anti-virus software installed, you may want to consider checking that software's settings. These types of software may cause JavaScript to malfunction. Many browsers and applications allow you to disable the blocking or security mechanisms for specific websites. Disabling these features for http://video.google.com will disable them within Google Video's individual playback pages as well.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I've been trying to embed a video on Blogger, but I keep getting "Invalid Login". What am I doing wrong?
A: We're aware of an issue affecting videos embedded to Blogger Beta using the "Post to: Blogger" feature from the "Email - Blog - Post to MySpace" button, and are working to find a solution.

In the meantime, we suggest posting the video manually on Blogger.
To manually post to Blogger, follow these steps:
Visit http://video.google.com and search for the videos title or for any unique elements located in the videos metadata or transcripts.
When you locate the video, click its thumbnail image or title, and then click on the "Email - Blog - Post to MySpace" button on the videos playback page.
From the "Edit HTML" section, copy the HTML code.
Log in to your Blogger account.
Select your blog and "Create new post."

Q: How do I upload videos?
A: There are two ways to get your videos onto Google Video.
If your video file is under 100 MB, the easiest and fastest way to upload a video is to use our web-based uploader. Uploading from the web-based uploader allows you to view, share, and post your video instantly. However, please note that your video will not be searchable or downloadable until it has been processed.
If your video is over 100 MB or if you'd like to upload multiple files at once, the Google Video Uploader client software is your best bet. Click here to download and install the program. You must then log in to your Video Status page after uploading to enter your videos metadata after uploading content with this software. Also, your video won't be available until after it has been processed.

Back to FAQs Index

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: How long does video processing take?
A: Videos submitted for inclusion in Google Video must be reviewed and pass our technical requirements and policies in order to become live on Google Video.

If you used the web-based uploader to submit your videos, you will receive a link to your live video instantly, but it may take several days for it to be included in the Google Video search results and become available for download.

If you used the uploader software, you can see which step your video is in during this review process on your Video Status page within your account.
Your videos will appear under one of the following tabs:
Needs Action
Processing
Rejected
Failed
Live
After you've entered your meta data, your video will be in the "Processing" stage for up to several hours and then will become "Live." If your video fails to meet our technical criteria or policies, your video will appear under the "Rejected" or "Failed" tab. If your video has been rejected, please review our policy guidelines. If your video has failed, please review our technical requirements.

Q: How can I optimize my video information?
A: Optimizing your video information will help users find your video.
Here are some tips on how to optimize your video information:
Add a descriptive title to your video. When users search for a topic on Google Video, they will find your content easier if you include the subject of your video in your title. For example, a video title such as "SS-59 submarine" may work better for a video than simply including "submarine."
Provide a clear description of your video. We recommend that your "metadata" field clearly describes the content of your video, while also highlighting any characteristics that distinguish your content from your competition. The metadata you enter will appear above your video when users play it on Google Video. If your metadata attracts users' attention they will more likely watch the entire video, and visit your website. Here's an example of good metadata: "This is a four minute news feature on the nuclear threat and the significance of the sinking of the Rainbow Warrior by French agents in 1985. It features interviews with former New Zealand Prime Minister David Lange, Guardian journalist Paul Brown, and Greenpeace Executive Director Gerd Leipold."
Choose the most appropriate genre for your movie. Choosing the correct genre will help users quickly determine the type of content you offer. For example, if you uploaded a cartoon you may want to choose "Animation" for your video genre.
Provide a URL for your website. The link to your website will appear on the right hand side of your video under the "Website" header. If you provide a URL for your website, users interested in your video can visit your site for more information, or purchase your video.

Click the "Upload Video" button.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Why isn't my video showing up in search?
A: Depending on site traffic, changes to video information can take 8 hours or more to show up in the search index after they've been uploaded, changed, or removed. This includes changes to tags, ratings, views, and comments. Please be patient - the video will show in the search index shortly. To bypass this time, you may want to send your friends the link of the video via email or private message.

To find videos that were recently uploaded, you may want to sort by "Date Added". To do this, search for the terms that describe the video. From the search results page, click the "Date Added" link on the left of the screen. This will allow you to see the most recently uploaded videos first.

Note that unless the username of the uploader is specified as a tag it may not be indexed for a video search. To find a user (and their videos), perform a search for their username and then select "Channels" on the left side of the page.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: How long will my video take to upload?
A: Depending on your connection speed and the size of the video, it can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours to upload a video. Generally, if you have a high-speed Internet connection you can expect the upload to take somewhere between 1-5 minutes for every 1MB. However, the experience is different for every user because of the variation in connection speeds.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: How long does it take to process a video after it's been uploaded?
A: Processing time varies greatly depending on the format of your original video, file size, and upload traffic. This could take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours.

If after 8 hours you still see a status message next to the video saying "Uploaded (processing, please wait)," try removing the video from our site and uploading it again. To do this, simply click the "Remove Video" button below the video in question in "My Videos" (http://youtube.com/my_videos) and go through the full upload process again.

Make sure your video is under 10 minutes in length and under 100 megabytes in size. We accept most video file formats, including .wmv, .mov, .mpg, or .avi. If your video meets these minimum requirements and still won't upload, there may be a problem with the video compression you're using. We recommend the MPEG4 format at 320x240 resolution with MP3 audio.

Back to FAQs Index

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Do I have to sign up to upload videos?
A: Yes. Since videos are attached to your profile, you must sign up as a member to upload videos. Becoming a member also allows you to save videos, create Playlists, and leave comments, among many other features.

Back to FAQs Index

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: What video file formats can I upload?
A: YouTube accepts video files from most digital cameras, camcorders, and cell phones in the .WMV, .AVI, .MOV, and .MPG file formats.

Back to FAQs Index

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: How long/large can my video be?
A: All videos uploaded to YouTube have a 100MB file size limit. The longer the video is, the more compression will be required to fit it into that size. For that reason, most videos on YouTube are under five minutes long and there is a 10-minute length limit for all videos.

Back to FAQs Index

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Is there a limit to how many videos I can upload?
A: We don't have any limit for the number of videos you can upload, and don't foresee adding a ceiling anytime in the future. So start making videos and upload as many as you'd like, it's more content for the whole YouTube community to enjoy!

Back to FAQs Index

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: My uploads been running a long time and hasn't completed. What should I do?
A: Uploading a video can take several hours, depending on the length of your video and the demand on the servers. If your video upload is taking longer than 24 hours to complete, we recommend canceling the upload, checking the length and settings for your video, and uploading it again.

Back to FAQs Index

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: What does "Invalid file format error" mean?
A: "Invalid file format error" means that your video is in a format that our system doesn't accept. We accept most file formats, including .wmv, .mov, .mpg, or .avi. If your video meets these minimum requirements and still won't upload, it may be due to a problem with the video compression you are using. We recommend the MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid) format at 320x240 resolution with MP3 audio.

If you're using Windows Movie Maker, it's also possible that you tried to upload your .MSWMM file. This is not an actual movie file. A .MSWMM file is a Windows Movie Maker project file. If you're satisfied with your movie, choose the "Save Movie File" option under the "File" menu to create a movie file that can be uploaded to YouTube.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: How do I decide what products to offer as Free vs. Paid Content?
A: At the very least, your Free Content should be an informative overview of your subject matter. We suggest giving away as much valuable content as you can, while reserving your premium information for any paid products and services you might offer.

Free IQ visitors are much more likely to purchase Paid, Premium Content if they are impressed with the knowledge and expertise presented in your Free Content presentation.

Your Free Content should be far more than just a sales pitch. While it is certainly expected that you will include information detailing the offer for your Paid Content, you should use it as a way of introducing people to a more unique approach that you share with them in the products you are selling. Rather than focus on the short-term sale, the objective is to concentrate on the long-term benefit to your business by offering value to your target audience.

Q: How Do I Use Video In Email Campaigns?
A: In order to get the best bang for your buck in utilizing your video in an email is just to keep it simple. Let the video do its work. Tease the audience with copy that is thought provoking, one that creates curiosity. Fewer words with a lead in to your video is most powerful.

To place your video in your email, use the embedded code provided by the host you are using. For example, lets assume you have a video on Google. Just log into your Google video account, bring up your video and look for the embedded code. It will look something like this:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1098259204041420273

If you prefer to strip out the Google frame, remove the videoplay and replace it with googleplayer.swf as per below:

http://video.google.com/googleplayer.swf?docid=1098259204041420273

To add it to a website, it would look like this:
